Making Our Own

/

December 04, 2003

How does one go about building a house? Lately my wife and I have been feeling the urge to do just that. Not to just buy a house but to build one tailored to our specific needs. A home not designed and built by a developer but rather by us and of course an architect.
We used to own a condominium and at some point we were very close to buying a home in the suburbs before making the decision to move closer to the city. Today we rent an apartment in a former US naval base still owned by the US Navy. Since the land where we live is government property, buying something here is not an option and with real estate prices as high as they are in the city, building there wont be possible.
We will probably end up moving away from the city, which I will hate, but the prospect of living in a space created by us has incredible appeal. It wont be an easy task and it will require an incredible amount of determination, patience and financial resources, but at the end I think the challenge although daunting is one worth pursuing.
